Transfer Students

Prospective transfer students (also known as external transfer students) are intending to apply, or already have applied, to the University of Maryland and are interested in Immersive Media Design. The first step for prospective transfer students is to review the university transfer requirements through the Office of Undergraduate Admissions.

The major has two different tracks of academic study:

Internal Transfer Students

The Immersive Media Design program is a limited enrollment program at the University of Maryland. Students who are currently enrolled at UMD and are interested in declaring either the Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science must complete a set of gateway requirements and submit a Limited Enrollment Program (LEP) application by the appropriate deadline.

First-Year Students

The University of Maryland’s Immersive Media Design (IMD) program offers two unique interdisciplinary majors that fuse the artistic expression of an Art degree with the technical mastery of a Computer Science degree.  An IMD degree provides you with the career skills and design experience to create emerging forms of digital media that move beyond a flat screen to immerse the user in new and complex virtual environments such as augmented and virtual reality, projective domes and spaces, interactive installations and sculptures, and tangible computing.

Get Involved

Immersive Media Design is a new undergraduate program that synthesizes art with computer science to encompass a wide range of immersive media applications. Read on for other ways to code, create and collaborate using the latest immersive technologies like virtual reality and augmented reality. If you have questions about the program, please direct them to imd@umd.edu.
