Transfer Students

Prospective transfer students (also known as external transfer students) are intending to apply, or already have applied, to the University of Maryland and are interested in Immersive Media Design. The first step for prospective transfer students is to review the university transfer requirements through the Office of Undergraduate Admissions.

Transfer students who intend to apply to Immersive Media Design will apply to the University of Maryland and indicate their major as either the Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science in Immersive Media Design. Immersive Media Design is a limited enrollment program at the University of Maryland and students are required to meet the gateway requirements to be directly admitted to their degree program of choice.

A minimum GPA of 2.7 in all courses taken (UMD and other institutions) is required for internal and external transfer students.

  • Completion of ARTT100 with a minimum grade of C-
  • Completion of ARTT110 with a minimum grade of C-
  • Completion of IMDM127 with a minimum grade of C-

Additionally, in the semester in which students take IMDM227, a portfolio will be submitted consisting of documentation or examples of selected artistic, digital media and computing projects. Students must also include a statement of interest in the major. Based on a review of this portfolio students will be invited to continue in the major. A minimum grade point average of 2.0 in all courses is required at this time.

The following guidelines pertain to all limited enrollment programs:

  • Only one gateway or performance review course may be repeated to earn the required grade and that course may only be repeated once. When more than one course can satisfy a gateway requirement, taking a second course from the list will count as a repeat. Please note that a grade of "W" is considered an attempt and must be repeated.
  • Students may apply once to an LEP.
  • Students who were directly admitted and fail to meet the performance review criteria will be dismissed from the major and may not reapply.
  • Students must maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.00 after admission to an LEP. Failure to do so will result in dismissal from the major.
  • Any student denied admission or dismissed from the major may appeal in writing to the individual LEP.

A minimum GPA of 2.7 in all courses taken (UMD and other institutions) is required for internal and external transfer students.

Frequently Asked Questions

If you are not directly admitted to Immersive Media Design because you have not satisfied the gateway requirements, you will be admitted to the Office of Letters and Sciences while you complete the gateway requirements. Once you complete these gateway courses, you will submit an internal limited enrollment program application by the appropriate deadline.

If you are transferring from a community college, the University of Maryland will accept up to 60 credits; the university will accept 90 credits from a four-year institution. We recommend speaking with the Pre-Transfer Advising Office to discuss in more detail which courses will transfer and how they will apply to your UMD degree; which courses will satisfy general education requirements/major requirements; and discuss how long it may take to complete your degree based on your previous coursework.

If you have previous computer science coursework that you believe would be equivalent to CMSC131, CMSC132, CMSC216, and/or CMSC250, prior to your matriculation to the university, you should consider taking exemption exams offered through the Department of Computer Science.
