Academic Advising

Curious how to best prepare for your advising session? Want to know how to schedule an appointment with your Immersive Media Design advisor? Everything you need to know is located here.

The Bachelor of Science and the Bachelor of Arts degree programs have different advising requirements, please make sure you are following the appropriate advising requirements.

As of Spring 2024, advising appointments will be offered in-person and virtually. When scheduling an advising appointment on TerpEngage, students are able to choose through the "Location" option.

Students pursuing the Bachelor of Arts in Immersive Media Design (Emerging Creatives) are required to meet with their Immersive Media Design advisor every semester to ensure they are making successful progress toward degree completion. Additionally, students are required to meet with the College of Arts and Humanities in their first semester after meeting with an IMD advisor, between 45 and 55 cr, and again between 86 and 100 cr.

Instructions will be sent every semester on how to schedule an appointment with your IMD advisor.

All students declaring an ARHU major and first semester students (both first year and transfers) are required to create and follow an academic plan for successful degree completion within a reasonable time. Please complete this using the directions on the Emerging Creatives Academic Planning page.

Students pursuing the Bachelor of Science in Immersive Media Design (Computing) are required to meet with their Immersive Media Design advisor every semester to ensure they are making successful progress toward degree completion. They are not required to meet with the College of Computer, Mathematical, and Natural Sciences. Students may meet with a CMNS Peer Mentor to discuss their academic plan, but it is not required.

Instructions will be sent every semester on how to schedule an appointment with your IMD advisor.

All first semester first-year and transfer students in the Computing B.S. are required to create and follow a graduation and academic plan for successful degree completion within a reasonable time. Please complete this using the directions on the Computing Academic Planning page.

Change of Degree Pathway

If a currently declared Immersive Media Design student wishes to pursue a different degree pathway within the program, they will need to meet with their assigned IMD academic advisor. To start this process, students should follow the instructions on the TerpEngage Change of Major webpage.

When meeting with their assigned advisor, students will discuss the requirements for the new pathway; time to degree completion; and personal, academic, and career goals. It should be noted: once a student leaves their current degree pathway they will not be able to return per limited enrollment program policies and guidelines.

This process is not for students who are not currently declared as an Immersive Media Design student. All current students at the University of Maryland in a different major on campus should consult the information provided on the Internal Transfer Student page.
