Lecturer

Matt has a passion for interdisciplinary collaborative work and higher education. He has taught more than 2,200 students over his career, and takes great pride in teaching excellence.  Matt is a Lecturer in the Immersive Media Design Program at University of Maryland in the Department of Computer Science where he currently teaches the Senior Capstone Classes and Creative Coding. He is also an executive Committee member of a2ru, Chair person for the a2ru Academic Metrics Working Group, and on the editorial board of Ground Works. He is a former Asst Prof. of Game Sound and Music for the Game Design Program at George Mason University.  In addition to teaching for that program 2010-2025, he was a founding member of the administrative team that brought this fast-paced arts and technology BFA program to the forefront of undergraduate experience in Virginia since 2008.  Matt was also the founding teacher of an after-school and summer camp program that eventually would become the Mason Game and Technology Academy.  Matt is an accomplished sound designer, musician, visual artist, programmer, presenter, entrepreneur, and permaculture designer. He holds an MFA in fine art-Visual Art (GMU '22), an MM in Music Composition (GMU '12) , and a BM in Music Synthesis as a voice principal (Berklee College of Music '07). 
His Specialties include: Real-time MIDI, Alternate Controllers, Digital Audio, Sound Design, Game Audio Design and implementation, Music Composition and Desktop Music Production, Programming for visualizations and interactivity, Participatory Entertainment, and Experiential Education design, prototyping, and delivery.  Matt joined the IMD Faculty in August 2025.  Select examples of his creative work can be found at : www.mattnolanart.com
