Departmental Exceptions to Policy
The Immersive Media Design program will consider a departmental exception to policy only in rare and extraordinary circumstances outside of a student's control. A request for a departmental exception to policy is not guaranteed.
The department does not make exceptions for poor judgment, poor performance, or forgetfulness. It is a student's responsibility to know and adhere to all academic policies. Any and all supporting documentation must be submitted via the Exception to Policy form. Any exception request submitted without supporting documentation will be automatically denied. All documents shared will be kept confidential.
We ask for 10-14 business days to review requests for exceptions and to receive a response. If it has been more than 14 business days, please email imd@umd.edu.
If you have any questions, please submit them to imd@umd.edu and make sure to include your full name and 9-digit UID number.
All students must meet the pre/co-requisites for the course(s) they intend to register for in the upcoming semester. Any student who does not meet the minimum pre/co-requisites for a course but wishes to register for it, must request a departmental exception to policy. Students requesting this exception must submit professor approval to imd-exceptions@umd.edu and ensure their justification and supporting documents prove an understanding of the requisite material to be successful in the course.
If a student is granted this exception, it is their responsibility to ensure they are setting themselves up for success in the course and the future. As a department, we strongly encourage students to review the course material to ensure they are adequately prepared for the upcoming semester and to make the determination whether the course meets their expectations. Should this not be the case, students should speak with their academic advisor to make changes during the schedule adjustment period.
This exception request is for Bachelor of Arts students only. Bachelor of Science students must complete MATH140 - Calculus I and MATH141 - Calculus II as prerequisites for additional Computer Science (CMSC) coursework. Requests to count different math courses toward the Bachelor of Science requirements will not be considered.
Bachelor of Arts students are required to take MATH115 - Precalculus.
If a student is wishing to take a course different from what is required, they must submit an exception to policy prior to registering for the alternate Math course. Once submitted the request will be reviewed by the Exceptions Coordinator for a decision.
Students are required to take a specific sequence of IMDM courses and courses from other disciplines on campus for successful degree completion. If a student wishes to take a course not otherwise specified on the four year plan, a justification is required. For example, students are required to choose one course from ENGL 143, 245, 255, 290, or 294; if a student would like to take a course not listed here, they would submit this exception request.
Once submitted the request will be reviewed by the Exceptions Coordinator for a decision.
Immersive Media Design reserves the right to not permit students to be added to a course once seats have been filled. Students requesting to be oversubscribed into a course must present rare and extraordinary circumstances beyond the students control.
Once submitted the request will be reviewed by the Exceptions Coordinator for a decision.
